2017 in one word: disruption.
More fintech startups, more deaths of new and existing startups, more internal and external investments. I am so eager to see how the game will play in 2017, maybe Jack ma of alibaba and elon musk of Tesla/Space X/Solar city/Hyperloop/Tunnels may visit.
@udemethegrtman
I see three tech trends in Nigeria:
-
The change in mobile money policies. I see the CBN doing a 180 degree on mobile money telco sectoral regulation in preparation for MTN listing and selling shares to the Nigerian public. The Nigerian elite greedy bast^%% that they are will be creating laws once again to benefit themselves.
-
Consolidation. I see another Jumia portal style consolidation in the tech sector. Maybe hotels.ng + wakanow + Konga
In addition so some good points mentioned above,
- Data will be free by the end of 2017. Weāll only have to pay for download speed.
- There will be more collaboration between fintech companies across Africa to bridge the digital divide.
- There will be renewed and heightened interest by politicians to support/buy/splash money aimlessly over tech companies in a bit to score point and leverage from network data.
- Paypal will attempt to bulge in Nigeria.
I am not in the business of technology predictions, I am in the business of promises. The Nigerian Diaspora will wake up and become ātech investment awareā. I am saying this because I will be instrumental to making that happen. Hold me to it as we MUST launch AltSeed. People that can send $35 Billion back home can fund more companies than all the Accelerators in Silicon Valley if they are organized and educated to do so.
How much are you guys willing to bet? @mark
It will also depend heavily on how educated and organized our startups too
Iād love to see this happen
So we have Emmanuel TV thread now?
I disagree with Nos (3)
I seriously look forward to @asemota launching AltSeed and would love to help whichever way I can .
From customersā perspective:
We want startup that will help us buy cheaper; niche classified for unused items
We want startup that will help us earn in US dollars; FinTech for connecting local savers with mutual funds abroad.
We want startup that will us learn faster; Edutech.
We want startup that will help us buy abroad and make payment in Naira
We want to compare product prices on one platform.
These are some of the real human problems that will drive great startups in 2017.
Great idea, I hope one local Fintech will take the jump here, but I believe there are opportunities to invest in local funds here, just like this Startup I came across in South Africa that is disrupting investing in stocks and mutual funds
Great points @Ogechi_Daniel_Ndukwe. Hope existing players or new ones will crack the nuts.
Here is my prediction for 2017. (yes I have just 1)
You will start hearing Tech stories from Benue state, starting with our first Tech enthusiasts meeting #BTF which is holding 21st January 2017. Itās time for us from here to join Lagos, KD etc in the new NG tech eco-system.
you need to get the $ first, no? there are $ denominated funds in Nigeria
@nosaaa FBN Eurobond fund is a dollar-denominated fund but tailored to clients with $1000 and above.
Which is pretty fair, no? Other $ denominated funds arenāt as low as that.
Itās beautiful reading all these thoughts. This tech community is really a large family, sharing, growing together and teaching other. Iām proud to be a part of it. Cheers and toast to 2017.
I predict it be the year for tech in Nigeria
Thanks bro
Nigeria is still a long shot away from drone delivery, drone delivery has not even kicked off in most other countries(developed). we have some fundamental problem/s that need to be fixed first; problems such as addressing; matching houses addresses to physical locations, govt policy towards drones etc. When these issues are first handled, then we can start preparing for drone delivery.
As for my 2017 prediction,
I predict disruption, more global recognition of the Nigerian IT ecosystem and I see more Nigerian tech companies coming up with products people from different part of the globe would be willing to use.
